![]() ![]() I have films that wont play from a HDD connected to the USB port on the living room TV (UE37C6000), but do play when using the Mac Book Pro as the media server and the Plex/Kodi client on the Amazon Fire TV.None of this transcoding is making any sense. ![]() So the Amazon Fire TV is not capable of transcoding ? I was doubtful whether it would because its a £79 device ! ![]() The living room TV has a surround sound system so it will need to be compatible with DD, DTS etc: My media setup is shown below and all devices are connected via wired ethernet (Cat5). I did look at a Mac Mini which I believe has the power to transcode, but the internal HDD is small and cannot be upgraded unless an external HDD is connected to the USB port, which is not ideal from what I have read ? The only additional hardware I would need are the HDDs to fit into the NAS.įrom what I understand, a NAS would be easier to setup than a server and would also work with Time Machine (unlike a server) ? I already have an Amazon Fire TV connected to one of three TVs, so I could eventually purchase some Amazon Fire TVs for the other two TVs.Įbuyer sell a diskless DS216+II for £289 inc VAT and two additional Amazon Fire TVs would cost £158 (£79 x 2). If my understanding is correct, any requirement for transcoding would be performed by the Amazon Fire TV so the processing power of the NAS (in terms of transcoding) would be irrelevant ? My understanding is that a server would have more processing power than a NAS especially when it comes to transcoding, so transcoding is my main concern. I have been put off the idea of a server, partly because of the effort involved (although I am confident I could work my way through it with some help and guidance) but mainly because it would be impossible or very difficult to get a server to work with Time Machine. I am thinking of getting a NAS to act as a media server and also for Time Machine backups of my Mac Book Pro over WiFi, either a Synology DS216+II or QNAP TS-251+ If I used a NAS as a media server and an Amazon Fire TV to run a Kodi/Plex/Emby, if the media had to be transcoded would this be performed by the Amazon Fire TV ? ![]()
